Last year West Coast Capital (WCC) decided that it would pay to offset its carbon emissions whilst reducing those emissions year on year. We reviewed several options and determined we could, via our Foundation's joint venture with former President Clinton in Africa, deliver a scheme that did not just offset carbon but could reduce poverty.
Thus we have developed and are running the Clinton Hunter Development Initiative (CHDI) Carbon Offsetting scheme, a Plan Vivo approved programme, in Rwanda and Malawi in partnership with their governments and local farmers.
Unlike many other schemes we don't make any money out of this, all funds, excepting the verification costs and original scheme design carried out by reputable third parties, are channeled into supporting Rwandan and Malawian farmers participating in the scheme.
So how does it work? They say a picture paints a thousand words so here are two simple diagrams to illustrate the CHDI Carbon Offsetting programme:
We think we may be on to something here - late last year our friends at Baugur Group (www.baugurgroup.com) committed £1m per annum to offset their carbon footprint having visited the scheme in Rwanda and signed off on it...
